Biography

Victoria K. Shanmugam, MD, is Director of the George Washington University Division of Rheumatology at The George Washington University.

A native of London, England, Dr. Shanmugam graduated with honors in Medicine from the Imperial College School of Medicine. She completed residencies at St. Bartholomew’s and the Royal London Hospitals and became a Member of the Royal College of Physicians in 2002. After moving to Washington, DC, Dr. Shanmugam pursued further residency and fellowship training in Internal Medicine and Rheumatology at Georgetown University.

Dr. Shanmugam has an active clinical practice caring for patients with autoimmune diseases, vasculitis, and chronic wounds. She has several ongoing research studies including the WE-HEAL Study which focuses on the interplay of the host immune response and the wound bed microbiome in patients with chronic wounds. Her research on genomics and biomarkers in chronic wounds is currently funded by the National Institutes of Health. Dr. Shanmugam is a frequently invited speaker at surgical, wound healing and rheumatologic professional meetings and has numerous publications in this field.

Dr. Shanmugam is a member of several professional societies both in Great Britain and the United States, including the Royal College of Physicians, American Medical Association, the American College of Physicians, the American College of Rheumatology, as well the British Medical Association. She is certified in Internal Medicine and Rheumatology.

Research

Dr. Shanmugam is the Principal Investigator of several ongoing research studies.  Her research on genomics and biomarkers in chronic wounds is currently funded by the National Institutes of Health. She is also the principal investigator of the STOP Scloeroderma Study. Her work in wound healing, hidradenitis and scleroderma has been published in high-impact peer-reviewed journals, such as Arthritis Care and Research, Current Opinion in Rheumatology, International Wound Journal and Clinical Rheumatology.

Dr. Shanmugam has received numerous awards for her research, including an American College of Rheumatology Physician Scientist Development Award, the John Eisenberg Memorial Career Development Award and the C. Bertram Hoffberger Research Achievement Award.  Her laboratory has had continuous NIH funding since 2010.

Dr. Shanmugam’s research interests include the interplay between the host immune response in the wound bed microbiome in patients with chronic wounds along with targeted biologic therapies for Hidradenitis Suppurativa and Scleroderma.  Dr. Shanmugam has also published research investigating the Aromatase Inhibitor Musculoskeletal Syndrome.
