Biography

Robert K. Zeman, MD, FACR, is board-certified in Diagnostic Radiology and Nuclear Radiology. He is the Chair of the Radiology and Radiation Oncology Department, Director of the Residency Training Program and a professor at The George Washington University School of Medicine & Health Sciences. He has a wide range of interests in thoracoabdominal imaging including cardiovascular MR, coronary CT angiography, peripheral vascular CTA, and nuclear cardiology. In addition, he also is closely involved in abdominal imaging, oncologic CT, and PET/CT efforts of the Radiology Department.

Dr. Zeman received his doctorate in Medicine from the Northwestern University School of Medicine in 1976. He completed his residency and fellowship training at the Yale New Haven Hospital in 1980, and has held faculty appointments at Yale and Georgetown University, and was chairman at the University of Vermont prior to his arrival at George Washington in 2000.

Dr. Zeman has held numerous positions in organized radiology. He has chaired the CT Accreditation Program for the American College of Radiology (ACR), serves as a member of the Quality and Safety Commission, and has participated in numerous task forces on radiation safety. He currently is an at-large member of the ACR Council, the ACR’s governing body and is past President of the DC Metropolitan Radiological Society. Dr. Zeman sits on the Economics Commission of the ACR and chairs its national Medicare Carrier Advisory Committee, in addition to being an advisor to Highmark Medicare Services. He also serves as a CPT advisor to the AMA. He has previously served on the Executive Board of the Society of Chairman of Academic Radiology Departments, the Scientific Program Committee for the Radiological Society of North America, and as Chair of the CME Committee for the Society of Gastrointestinal Radiology. He currently is a member of the Editorial Board of the journal Abdominal Imaging, and has previously served as an Associate Editor of the American Journal of Roentgenology.

Dr. Zeman has co-authored five textbooks including one of the first texts on helical CT scanning entitled "Helical/Spiral CT: A Practical Approach". He has published over 180 publications in peer-reviewed journals or invited reviews. His articles regarding the use of CT angiography in the assessment of aortic aneurysm and aortic dissection in the American Journal of Roentgenology were among the first reported in the mid-1990's. Dr. Zeman continues to lecture at post-graduate courses of the Radiological Society of North America, the Society of Gastrointestinal Radiology, the American Roentgen Ray Society, the Society of Nuclear Medicine, and serve as visiting professor at major universities.

Dr. Zeman gave a keynote address in the opening plenary session of the Radiological Society of North America in 1994, entitled "Helical/Spiral CT of the Abdomen: A New Imaging Modality". He was awarded fellowship in the American College of Radiology in 1998.
