Biography

Paige L. McDonald, EdD, MA, is Vice Chair and an Associate Professor with tenure in the Department of Clinical Research and Leadership at the George Washington University (GW) School of Medicine and Health Sciences (SMHS). Prior to assuming the role of Vice Chair, Paige served as the Director for Curriculum in the PhD in Translational Health Sciences. In that program, she currently teaches courses in Translational Science in Complex Health Systems, Knowledge Translation in Complex Health systems, and Translating Literature for Interdisciplinary Scholarship. She also designed and taught the course a PhD course in Implementation Science. Previously at GW, she has designed and taught undergraduate courses in writing and graduate courses in leadership and change management. She has also co-taught a course on Health, Justice, and Society in the Physician Assistant Studies Program. Paige is a member of the SMHS Academy of Education Scholars and is currently serving on the Appointment, Promotion, and Tenure committees for the Department of Health Sciences and SMHS.

Prior to joining the GW faculty, Dr. McDonald had over 20 years of leadership in military, educational, and consulting sectors. She served as faculty for several institutions of higher education, with a focus on designing curricula for adult learners in online programs. In 2004, she and a fellow Naval Academy graduate started their own corporate coaching business, BeaconLeader Inc. The company delivers training to small and medium sized companies in leadership development, organizational development, process improvement, and change management. In her early career, she served for five years on active duty in the United States Navy as an Antisubmarine Warfare Officer and Administrative Department Head.

Research

Dr. McDonald has over a decade of experience in educational research focusing on adult learning, blended learning, online learning, and health professions education. This research emphasizes learning design and delivery that will prepare the future health professions workforce for the complexity of 21st century practice. More recent scholarly interests include learning health systems, knowledge translation, and quality improvement in healthcare with a desired outcome of understanding how to promote knowledge translation and learning for continuous improvement in health and healthcare.
 

Teaching

Dr. McDonald has over 26 years of experience teaching undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral level courses in various higher education settings. She has taught at The George Washington University since 2008. Since then, she has designed undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral courses for both online and blended delivery. Currently she teaches courses in the PhD in Translational Health Science program.
