He completed his medical school training at Jefferson Medical College in 1984, an internal medicine residency at Strong Memorial Hospital in 1987, and an infectious diseases fellowship at Johns Hopkins Hospital in 1991. Following his training, Dr. Kendig was appointed Medical Director of the Maryland Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services from 1991 through 1996. He then became a Commissioned Officer in the United States Public Health Service (USPHS) assigned to the Federal Bureau of Prisons (FBOP) where he served as Chief of Infectious Diseases, Medical Director, and ultimately Assistant Director in charge of the Health Services Division from 1996 to 2015. In October 2015, Dr. Kendig retired from the USPHS and the FBOP as a rear admiral and USPHS assistant surgeon general.
In 2017, Dr. Kendig was appointed Clinical Professor of Medicine at GW to help spearhead a criminal justice health initiative for the university. Dr. Kendig firmly believes that addressing the needs of justice-involved patients will help reduce health care disparities and result in healthier and safer communities. Furthermore, he believes the academic community can make valuable contributions toward this goal through educational programming, meaningful research, and health care delivery to justice-involved patients. “I am excited to forge new justice-health initiatives for GW students from on-line training, to public policy discussions, to clinical care opportunities managing incarcerated patients and those justice-involved patients under community supervision.”
