Biography

Gurleen Kaur, MD is an assistant professor of medicine in the Division of Renal Disease and Hypertension at the George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences.

Dr. Kaur holds a certification with the American Board of Internal Medicine and American Board of Internal Medicine-Nephrology. She is also a Certified Hypertension Specialist with the American Society of Hypertension. She is currently pursuing a fellowship in Integrative medicine at the University of Arizona through the Andrew Weil School of Integrative Medicine.

After receiving her medical degree from Dr. D.Y. Patil Medical College, India, Dr. Kaur completed an internal medicine residency at the MacNeal Hospital, Berwyn, IL, where she was chosen to serve as the Chief Medical Resident. She went on to complete a nephrology fellowship at the Emory University, and was again selected as the chief fellow for her fellowship program. During her fellowship at Emory, Dr. Kaur also completed a course on kidney ultrasound examination and is certified to perform ultrasound studies on native and transplant kidneys under Charles O'Neill, MD.

Dr. Kaur is a member of the American Society of Nephrology. Her research interests include vascular calcification in chronic kidney disease and the effect of diet and lifestyle modification on clinical outcomes in patients with kidney disease. In this capacity, she leads the GW Integrative and Preventive Nephrology Clinic that is specifically designed to slow the progression of the disease by evidence-based natural therapies including the use of whole food plant-based diet in chronic kidney disease management. She also uses holistic approaches towards the treatment of poorly controlled hypertension, diabetes, obesity, and stress management which directly improves a patients overall outcome. She has a strong belief in practicing “reverse medicine”, a holistic method that involves diet modification, exercise, and nutritional supplements to reverse the common lifestyle diseases while minimizing medication burden.

Dr. Kaur is the director of the GW Hypertension Center, which is devoted to the management of resistant hypertension and secondary hypertension.
