Dr. Simon received his B.S. degree from the University of Maryland, a Ph.D. in physical chemistry from the University of Wisconsin and an M.D. degree from the University of Maryland where he was elected to AOA. He completed residency training at the University of Maryland Hospital and a fellowship in infectious diseases at Tufts-New England Medical Center. He joined the faculty at GW in 1980. He has been the director of the division since 1993. Dr. Simon serves as Director of Research for the GW Medical Faculty Associates and the clinical departments of the GW School of Medicine and Health Sciences. He is also co-director of the NIH-funded DC-Center for AIDS Research.


His areas of interest include HIV infection, HIV-related opportunistic infections and HIV comorbidities. Other areas of interest include bacteremia, septic shock and surgical infections. In addition, during the past three decades the infectious disease group at GW has been involved in clinical trials of virtually every drug that has been used to treat HIV infection. Current studies are directed towards examining HIV-mediated inflammation.


Dr. Simon’s awards include the Laureate award from the American College of Physicians and the GW School of Medicine and Health Sciences Distinguished Researcher Award. He was elected to mastership in the American College of Physicians in 2008.
