Biography

Fred Brody, M.D., joins The George Washington University Hospital as Director of Minimally Invasive Surgery Center and Associate Professor of Surgery. Dr. Brody received his undergraduate and medical degrees from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He completed his residency at The George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences and subsequently completed a fellowship in Laparoscopic Surgery at Duke University Medical Center. Since his fellowship, he has been an Attending Surgeon at The Cleveland Clinic Foundation with major emphasis in Laparoscopic Surgery. Dr. Brody is an active member of the Society of American Gastrointestinal Endoscopic Surgery, the American College of Surgeons and the Society of Surgeons of the Alimentary Tract. He is a Board Certified General Surgeon and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. His clinical expertise is laparoscopic surgery, particularly stomach, spleen, adrenals, pancreas, hernias, colon, esophagus, and the gallbladder. His research interests include trials regarding clinical outcomes and innovative laparoscopic techniques and instruments. Other research interests include basic science studies of the GI tract.

He has been an invited speaker to many groups in the US and abroad. His lectures include, "Laparoscopic Management of Pancreatic Disease," "Laparoscopic Management of Morbid Obesity", "Laparoscopic Management of Gastroesophageal Disease", "Laparoscopic Splenectomy", and "Laparoscopic Management of Gastroparesis." Dr. Brody is published widely in prominent journals including The American Journal of Surgery, Surgical Endoscopy, Archives of Surgery, Surgery, and The Journal of Gastrointestinal Surgery. He has authored approximately 50 original manuscripts.

Dr. Brody has held several national appointments for the Society of American Gastrointestinal Endoscopic Surgeons including Co-Chairman of several Hands on Lab Course (Solid Organ 1999 & Colon 2000); Co-Chairman of the Learning Center 2001; and Video Chairman 2003. He is currently a member of several SAGES committees including Publications, Membership, and Fundamentals of Laparoscopic Surgery. Presently, he is the Co-Chairman of the Membership Committee.

In 1995 Dr. Brody was the recipient of both the Society of American Gastrointestinal Endoscopic Surgeons Basic Science Research Award and the Ralph G. DePalma Basic Research Award.

Dr. Brody is involved currently in several research trials including "Electrical Stimulation for Weight Loss" and "Electrical Stimulation for Diabetes."
