Biography
Andrew D. Choi, MD, FACC, MSCCT, is the Co-Director of Multimodality Cardiac Imaging and Associate Professor of Medicine and Radiology at GW where he directs multimodality imaging directed clinical care, research and education for a wide spectrum of cardiovascular prevention and treatment in atherosclerosis, structural heart disease and cardiomyopathies utilizing Cardiac CT, Cardiac MRI and interventional/3D echocardiography, as well as support to general echocardiography and nuclear imaging. In addition, Dr. Choi provides expert preventive consultation on complex cholesterol/lipid disorders as the clinical lead for GW Lipid Program and general cardiology. At GW, he lectures medical students, physician assistant and biomedical engineering students in cardiac imaging and is a clinical educator of resident and fellow physicians. He frequently mentors top medical students, residents and fellows in cardiac imaging scholarship. His mentees have gone on to successful clinical training at the top academic institutions in the United States, careers in academic medicine and clinical practice.
Dr. A. Choi is a GW School of Medicine alumnus, graduating as the Allie S. Freed Awardee in Preventive Medicine including training in the GW Lipid Research Clinic in the early 2000s under the mentorship of Dr. Judith Hsia. He trained in Internal Medicine at Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai (NY), Cardiology at Georgetown University and in Advanced Cardiovascular Imaging for 2 years as the Inaugural Fellow in a joint program at the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute-National Institutes of Health (NIH) and Washington Hospital Center. He has been elected to the Alpha Omega Alpha honor society, recognized in 2021 by the American College of Cardiology (Maryland Chapter) for Distinguished Service.

Research
Dr. A. Choi’s research in cardiac imaging is multifaceted. Current interests are focused on the application of artificial intelligence (AI) to cardiac computed tomography angiography to enhance the detection of coronary atherosclerosis. An AI guided approach may potentially improve the prediction of heart attacks, response to common heart medications like statins and enhance risk models for potentially millions at risk around the world. Dr. A. Choi also has interests in the translation of new cardiac CT methods to improve clinical practice, complex and structural cardiac disease, and novel educational approaches to global cardiovascular imaging dissemination, such as through social media.
As a national cardiovascular imaging thought leader and GW/national collaborator, Dr. Choi is widely published as author of more than 200 abstracts and publications, including in leading cardiovascular journals such as Journal of the Am. College of Cardiology, Journal of the Am. College of Cardiology: Cardiovascular Imaging, JAMA: Cardiology and the Journal of Cardiovascular Computed Tomography (JCCT). His impactful work has received multiple research awards including the 2020 Society of Cardiovascular Computed Tomography (SCCT) Best Abstract and Runner-Up Award, SCCT Young Investigator Award, SCCT Outstanding Academic Researcher Award (Finalist) and the American College of Cardiology Young Investigator Award Finalist (Mid-Atlantic). He has led as Co-Chair multiple guideline/guidance statements including the 2020 SCCT/ACC Endorsed COVID-19 Guidance Statement and of the 2020 SCCT Independent and Advanced Practitioner Education Guideline for cardiology and radiology trainees around the world. Dr. A. Choi is an editor at JACC: Cardiovascular Imaging haspreviously served as Associate Editor at JCCT was elected to the Board of Directors of the Society of Cardiovascular Computed Tomography (2020-2023) with members in 85 countries and was recognized in 2023 as a Master of the Society of Cardiovascular Computed Tomography (MSCCT), an honor that has only been bestowed to the top 1% of the field.
